Here's the complete package to install and use the TT Cabinets and Cases Icon Hierarchy on your Mac desktop. Just download these two TT files, for a totally new look. (The README is an AOL mail document including First Class Text-Pictures of sample icons.)
The spiel: A true hierarchy has elements of different magnitude, like in chess: King, Rook, Bishop, Knight, etc. Right? so why are we content with a single element to house all our files, no matter how diverse? I'm talking, of course, about folders within folders, within folders, within folders, etc. . . . Here are two new elements: CABINETS, which hold CASES, and your FOLDERS go in the cases. This seems a lot more Mac-spirited to me than nesting endless conceptual folders (which is too much like the stone-age DOS "directories," "sub-directories," etc.).
I use the Cabinets for top-level files like the System files, and for prime divisions like Word Processing, Graphics, Games, and for major applications like Photoshop or Word that have a lot of nested folders. The Cases work best for smaller apps or groups of documents or graphic files ("Letters," "Aircraft Graphics," etc.). Both styles are ribbed to match the proto-System-8 Copland look of the ~Aaron extension by Greg Landweber available from MUT (optional, but awesome).
The TT Cabinet and Case package includes the Folder Icon Maker resources (with permission from author Greg Robbins) to do the job, plus some sample Cabinets and Cases. You can download the freeware F.I.M. from this area, just search the Software Libraries) and go nuts dragging and dropping, creating Cabinets and Cases from virtually any icon.
The resources were created with bona-fide Apple Icon and 256 System color palettes, look great highlighted, and take Label colors very nicely.
